Can Dry Eyes Cause Blurry Vision?

Have you ever noticed your vision getting fuzzy after staring at your computer screen for hours? Or maybe your eyes feel scratchy and your sight seems cloudy when you wake up in the morning? You’re not alone. Many people experience this frustrating combination of dry, uncomfortable eyes and blurry vision.

Dry eyes can absolutely cause blurry vision.

When the eye’s surface is rough, dry, and irregular, light can scatter as it enters the eye, preventing it from focusing properly on the retina, with or without prescription lenses.

The result? Blurry or fluctuating vision, on top of the irritating dry eye symptoms we’re all too familiar with: redness, discomfort, and watery eyes.

Persistent blurriness is reason enough to visit your eye doctor, but updated glasses might not be the right course of action. If dry eyes are behind your symptoms, it might be time to explore dry eye therapies

Dry Eye & Blurry Vision: The Connection

Dry eye disease is no stranger to millions of Americans. It’s a chronic condition that occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or when the quality of tears is poor, preventing them from properly lubricating the eye’s surface.

Besides helping us express how we feel, tears play a prominent role in maintaining good eye health. Tears protect the eyes from harmful debris and keep the corneal surface moist for clear, sharp vision. The secret to a healthy tear film? Balance.

Tears are a combination of oils, water, and mucus that work together to keep your eyes healthy and comfortable. When this tear system breaks down, several things can happen that directly affect your vision.

Rough Corneal Surface

Your tear film acts like a smooth, clear coating over the front of your eye. When you blink, fresh tears spread across your cornea, creating an even surface that light can pass through clearly.

An unstable tear film creates an irregular surface that can scatter light instead of letting it pass through properly, resulting in blurry or fluctuating vision.

The Blink Connection

When your eyes feel dry and uncomfortable, you might blink more frequently to try to compensate for the discomfort, or not blink properly at all.

Incomplete blinks don’t spread tears evenly across your eye surface, making both the dryness and vision problems worse. You might notice that your vision clears up temporarily when you blink or use eye drops, only to get blurry again within minutes.

The Contact Lens Concern

Contact lenses offer freedom from glasses, providing a more natural field of vision. With proper handling, contacts can feel so comfortable that you might even forget you’re wearing them.

That said, improper contact lens wear can contribute to dry eye and blurry vision because they rely on a healthy, hydrated tear film to stay comfortable.

Dry Eye Relief: Innovative Solutions

While we cannot cure dry eye, we can effectively manage its symptoms. This helps restore comfort and visual clarity, but it also reduces the risk of developing severe concerns, such as corneal scarring.

The sooner you take action, the better. With innovative dry eye therapies, we can target the root cause of your symptoms, so you can experience relief that lasts:

  • OptiLIFT by Lumenis: This device gently massages the oil-secreting (meibomian) glands that line the eyelids to promote healthy oil production. This stabilizes the tear film and prevents tear evaporation.
  • Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy: This device uses controlled pulses of light to stimulate proper gland function and target inflammation to improve tear quality.
  • Low-level light therapy (LLLT): This treatment uses red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular regeneration and reduce eyelid inflammation.
  • LipiFlow thermal pulsation: This treatment delivers precise heat and gentle pressure directly to the meibomian glands to restore their function and promote a healthier tear film.
  • Amniotic membrane therapy: Amniotic membranes have anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring properties. This helps encourage tissue regeneration and improve comfort for those with severe dry eye.
  • Punctal plugs: These tiny devices conserve natural tears on the surface of the eyes, providing moisture and relief for those with insufficient tear production.

Not all dry eyes are the same, and effective treatment requires understanding whether your problem stems from tear production issues, tear quality problems, or both, which is why dry eye relief begins with a thorough consultation

Dry Eye Relief: At-Home Solutions

Professional treatments can provide a strong foundation for dry eye management, but at-home solutions can be a great way to complement their results, especially when you’re in between sessions.

Artificial Tears

Artificial tears are an excellent way to restore moisture to the eyes because they mimic the natural composition of tears. Preservative-free drops are the way to go, especially if you find yourself reaching for them often.

Environmental Changes

Your surroundings have a bigger impact on your eyes than you might realize.

Dry air, wind, and air conditioning can all worsen dry eye symptoms. Using a humidifier in your bedroom and office can help maintain moisture in the air. Position fans and air vents so they don’t blow directly on your face.

The 20-20-20 Rule

Long hours on digital screens can contribute to dry eye symptoms because we tend to blink less often.

The 20-20-20 rule provides a simple solution: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. A brief break allows your eyes to relax and encourages complete blinking, which helps spread tears evenly across your eye surface.

Proper Eyelid Hygiene

Clean eyelids support healthy tear production. Gently cleaning your eyelids with a warm, damp cloth or eyelid wipes removes debris and bacteria that can contribute to dry eye inflammation.

Warm Compress

Warm compress masks are a great way to manually stimulate the meibomian glands.

Apply the compress over your eyelids and massage the area gently with your fingers. The warmth and light pressure help soften oils, encouraging proper gland function.

Take Action for Clearer, More Comfortable Vision

Blurry vision doesn’t always stem from changes in your vision prescription—it could be from untreated dry eye. Dry eye therapy offers an effective way to manage your symptoms, helping to restore comfort, vision, and overall eye health. The sooner you take action, the better. Every dry eye journey is unique.
